Branded search defense: why your SEO strategy starts with your own name

Competitors are bidding on your brand terms on Google. AI answer engines are summarizing your brand without linking to you. Here is how to defend and grow your branded search presence.

The value of branded search that most brands underestimate

When someone searches for your brand name, they are a warm lead. They already know you exist. Branded search conversion rates are typically three to seven times higher than non-branded category searches. The customer who searches "Layer Insights pricing" has already decided to explore your product. The customer who searches "DTC analytics platform" is still in discovery mode.

Branded search is not free traffic. It requires active management because three threats erode it: competitors bidding on your brand terms, AI-generated answers that satisfy the query without sending the user to your site, and your own SEO weaknesses that allow competitors to rank for your brand name organically.

Competitor brand term bidding

Any competitor with a Google Ads account can bid on your brand name. When someone searches your brand, they see your competitor's ad alongside your organic result. Click-through rate on your organic result drops. Your branded search CTR going from 85 percent to 65 percent on a channel that converts at 8 percent represents a meaningful revenue loss.

The response is to run your own branded search campaign at a low CPC that out-competes competitor bids. Your quality score on your own brand terms is near-perfect, which means you pay a fraction of what competitors pay to show up for your name. A branded campaign costing 200 euros per month can protect millions of euros in branded organic traffic.

A branded search campaign is not acquisition spend. It is infrastructure. Treat it as a fixed cost of doing business, not a channel with an ROAS target. The alternative, handing branded conversions to competitors, costs more than the campaign.

Generative search and zero-click results

AI-powered search features, including Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT search, increasingly answer brand queries without sending users to your website. A customer who searches your brand name and receives an AI-generated summary that says "Layer Insights is a Shopify analytics platform with pricing starting at X euros" may never click through to your site.

This is the GEO challenge (Generative Engine Optimization). You cannot stop AI engines from summarizing your brand. But you can influence what they say. AI engines draw primarily from content that is accurate, well-structured, and frequently updated. Maintaining a comprehensive, factually precise About page, FAQ, and product description ecosystem that AI engines can reference accurately is now a core SEO task.

Non-branded category SEO as a long-term moat

Branded search defense is about protecting existing demand. Non-branded category SEO is about capturing new demand. The goal is to rank for the queries your customers use before they know your brand: "best analytics for Shopify DTC," "how to fix Meta attribution," "DTC margin calculator."

Category rankings build slowly. A well-executed content program for a DTC analytics brand might produce meaningful category rankings in six to twelve months. The payoff is compounding: a first-page ranking for a category term that generates 5,000 searches per month requires no ongoing spend to maintain, unlike a paid search campaign for the same term.

Content architecture for branded search strength

Your branded search strength correlates with the breadth and quality of content that covers your brand accurately. Product pages, pricing pages, comparison pages, and customer story pages all contribute to your brand's search presence. A brand with six pages of content about itself ranks differently than a brand with sixty pages.

Prioritize pages that answer the specific questions your prospects have at different stages. A pricing page that explains exactly what is included at each tier answers a question thousands of prospects have. A detailed integration guide that shows how you connect to Shopify answers a question that reduces sales friction. These pages serve both branded search and the sales process.
