Why your TikTok ads underperform, and how CAPI fixes it

TikTok needs 50+ purchase events per week to exit learning. Most Shopify stores send far fewer, not because volume is low, but because tracking is broken.

The TikTok learning phase problem

TikTok Ads needs at least 50 optimization events per ad group per week to exit the learning phase. During learning, CPMs are higher, delivery is inconsistent, and results are unreliable. Most Shopify stores on TikTok stay in permanent learning, not because they have too few sales, but because TikTok only sees a fraction of them.

Why TikTok loses conversion data

The TikTok Pixel faces the same client-side limits as any pixel. Ad blockers, iOS Safari, and direct navigation after an ad all drop attribution. TikTok’s audience is heavily mobile, so iOS restrictions hit harder.

A typical Shopify store with 100 purchases per week might show only 60 to 65 in TikTok Events Manager. That is not enough to exit learning at ad group level when 5 to 10 ad groups run at once.

What TikTok Events API does differently

TikTok Events API sends events from your server, bypassing browser restrictions. Combined with the client-side pixel and deduplication via event_id, you capture close to all actual conversions.

TikTok names purchase events CompletePayment, not Purchase. That naming mismatch is a common source of broken server-side setups.

Advanced matching for TikTok

The highest-value identifiers are hashed email (+3.0), hashed phone (+2.5), the _ttp first-party cookie (+1.5), and ttclid from ad links (+1.5). _ttp and ttclid need the client-side pixel, which is why dual-dispatch beats server-side alone.

The 50-event threshold strategy

If you have fewer than 50 purchases per week per ad group, optimize for a higher-funnel event first. Start with AddToCart, exit learning, then switch to CompletePayment once there is enough signal. Layer Insights shows event volume per platform so you can pick the event that actually exits learning.
